Prairie Skies

Laying on your back and looking at the sky, immerse in the tranquil simplicity of this artwork. Here, the presence of timber and grain elevators evokes a poignant reflection on history. Once symbolic of prosperity and social unity in small towns during the 18th and 19th centuries in North America and Europe, these structures now stand as humble reminders of the industrial landscape's bygone era.

Fields of sunflowers give home to a myriad of creatures, symbolising community, loyalty, and worship as they follow the suns position each day. Clytie, a Greek water nymph was in love with the sun god, Helios, however Helios was in love with another. Jealous Clytie was cast to be rooted to the earth, and watched Helios from afar as he rose and fell each day. The exaggerated colouring expresses pure devotion and happiness, and brings vibrancy to any room.

As I sat there, looking out of my dining room window, I dreamt of the places I planned to go. Things left undone, and the feeling of isolation, surrounded by dreams I didn't realise I had before. During the development of this piece, my art professor asked if whiskey was present in my cup. It is possible.

Working directly with children, each child designed their balloons and chosen career path. I recreated their designs and created this piece for an event on behalf of a children's charity foundation. This portrayal of a childlike fantasy is based off one of my favourite children's authors, Dr. Seuss.
Oshun
90 h x 60 w x 4 d cm, Oil on cotton canvas - 2022
Working with this model was an absolute joy, as her presence resonated with the captivating aura of Oshun, an African goddess celebrated for her strength and sensuality. Oshun, often depicted as a woman of profound beauty, holds dominion over rivers, love, and fertility. Drawing inspiration from this divine archetype, the artist skillfully accentuated the model's features, highlighting her innate strength and sensuality. The use of pastels in the painting serves as a deliberate choice to amplify the goddess-like qualities of the subject. Soft and ethereal, the pastel palette not only enhances the model's natural beauty but also alludes to Oshun's heightened powers. Pastels, with their gentle hues, become a visual metaphor for the goddess's ability to infuse the world with love, warmth, and the rejuvenating energy of flowing rivers.
